Sharing Info šŸ’” Getting Ready for Winter: Let's Talk Shelters, Water Bowls, and Beyond!

As those of us in the northern hemisphere are heading into fall weather, now is the time to start thinking about how to provide for your cats and colonies so they can get used to their new or refreshed shelters before they genuinely need them. Seasoned caregivers, feel free to show off your own shelter setups in the comments, whether they're homemade or pre-built/store-bought! It's always an inspiration to see what others have come up with and I know I've seen some great shelters shared here over the years. Feel free to pass along any other cold or extreme weather tips and tricks you've picked up as well!

And for any new caregivers to community cat(s) visiting in, here are two basic shelter designs to get you started that can be built quickly, easily, and affordably to provide your cat with warm, dry shelter as the temperature drops or the wind and rain/snow picks up. Also scroll down for more cold weather topics, including heated options and tips for keeping water from freezing!

Temporary Cardboard Shelter

If the cold is closing in, you're short on time and aren't able to run around for supplies, you can make a temporary emergency shelter using a cardboard box, heavy duty garbage bags or drop cloth, and duct tape to hold it all together, then filled with shredded newspaper for bedding (check often and refresh as needed!). It's simple, but in an emergency it can make all the difference and will help tide your cats over until a more permanent shelter option can be set up.

From Neighborhood Cats:

(1) Take the cardboard box and tape all the seams shut with duct tape. Cardboard is actually good insulation.

(2) Wrap the box completely with the drop cloth or trash bags, making as few seams as possible. Secure onto the box with duct tape, liberally and tightly wrapping the tape around the sides of the box and sealing any seams in the plastic. This will make the shelter waterproof.

(3) Cut a doorway in one of the shorter sides of the box approximately 6 inches by 6 inches, leaving the bottom of the doorway a few inches above the bottom of the box to prevent flooding. Use duct tape to secure the loose plastic around the opening you just made.

(4) Place shredded newspaper inside the box, filling it up to the bottom of the doorway in front and a little higher towards the back. The cats will gain added warmth by burrowing into the newspaper.

For added insulation, start by placingĀ a slightly smaller cardboard box inside a larger one and fill the gap between them with rolled-upĀ newspaper. Then proceed with steps 1 through 4, above, being sure to cut the doorway through both boxes.

Basic Insulated Tote Shelter

For something a little more permanent, you can make an effective, relatively inexpensive shelter following along with this guide by IndyFeral using these basic materials:

  • 30 gallon plastic storage tote
    • Tip: Use a hairdryer to heat up and soften the plastic while you cut out your opening(s). If you're building multiple shelters or are using heavy duty totes, a variable temperature hot knife may be a worthwhile investment for easily cutting through plastic.
  • A styrofoam cooler or 1" thick foam board insulation. Foam board can be found in smaller 2x2' project panels like this, or in larger 4x8' sheets that are ideal for making multiple shelters. Some insulation boards, such as R-Tech's, come with one side lined with foil. When placed facing inward, the foil can help make your shelter warmer by reflecting the cat's body heat back towards them.
    • Shelter interiors can also be lined with mylar blankets or bubble foil insulation to achieve the same effect when using styrofoam or non-reflective insulation board.
  • Straw for bedding. Straw is both moisture repellent and mold resistant, it acts as an insulator, and when fluffed up in your shelter your cat will be able to burrow into it to help trap their body heat all around them. Note: there is a difference between straw and hay. Alley Cat Allies explains here; in short hay does the opposite of what you want inside a shelter. Also avoid blankets/fabric bedding in your winter shelters. This includes self-heating beds; use mylar or bubble foil insulation instead! Fabrics will get damp in rainy/snowy conditions and will either freeze in cold temps or will get moldy. This type of bedding can make your cat colder. Stick with straw!
    • Straw bales can typically be found at feed stores, garden centers, local farms, and even online!
    • Untreated mini bales can also be found at craft stores and will also work well in a cat shelter, especially if you don't need much straw.
    • After Halloween and towards winter you may even have neighbors discarding their fall decorations. You may be able to find someone in your area that has a straw bale they no longer need! Nextdoor or neighborhood Facebook groups can be helpful with this.
  • Placing at least 3-4 bricks along the bottom of your shelter underneath your insulation flooring is helpful for adding weight to keep it from budging in extreme wind. Sand or gravel can be other good options for adding weight to the interior of your shelter. This can also help with raising your entrances to mitigate snow buildup!
    • Also consider taping or weighing your tote lid down to keep it from blowing open in high winds.
  • Cut your entrance up high enough that your shelter floor will have a lip after insulation/bricks are installed for keeping your straw from spilling out as cats go in and out. If you're in an area that sees snowy winters, having a higher entrance will also help keep your cats from being snowed in as easily.
  • Alternate entrances for your shelter may include:
    • Plastic cat flaps. These can also be a great compromise on a second entrance for wary cats! Secure them open and they're like miniature awnings, or close one to turn your second entrance into a window to allow your cat to feel more secure while reducing excess heat loss from a second opening.
    • Flower pots with the bottom removed can be inserted into your shelter opening to create a short tunnel. This provides a nice clean edge for the cat to move through, and also helps protect from rain and snow blowing in at an angle.
    • Thin vinyl flaps to provide light cover over openings. Note that cats may not figure solid flaps out right away and may need time to get used to using the shelter with an open entrance first. Cutting the flap into strips may help as there will be gaps that can encourage the cat to poke their face through.
  • Interested in roofing? PVC Roofing Panels can be a great addition to your tote shelter to help keep snow from building up around it or blowing in. 8' panels can be carefully cut with heavy duty scissors into smaller sections to fit your tote lids and provide more of an overhang. Round the corners after cutting if they have sharp edges!

u/SilentSixty's Guide to Cat Shelters

u/SilentSixty has taken the time to write up a more detailed guide on building your own feral cat shelter that's loaded with more helpful tips and tricks and goes into great detail on designs and additions that can be used to improve your cat shelters. Check it out if you're looking to build something that's a bit heavier duty or you want to try beefing up your setup from previous winters! Topics covered include heated vs unheated shelters, considerations for a second exit on your shelter, location, and what it might mean if the cats just aren't using your shelter.

Shelter Galleries

Alley Cat Allies and Neighborhood Cats have both compiled lists of various store-bought and DIY shelter schematics into their own galleries if you'd like to see more options and designs than what were covered here. There are lots of creative builds and setups to be found!

Heated Shelters, Pads, and Bowls!

If you have an outdoor electrical outlet, heated shelters and pads can be great ways to provide for your cats in the colder months. However, these should not be your only shelter option; in the most extreme winter weather, power outages are possible, and heavy snow can still cause fabric coverings on heated pads to get damp and cold, or even freeze. Plan ahead and keep some spare unheated, straw shelters as a backup.

Please stay safe when implementing any sort of electrical product into your colony setup! Make sure that you are plugging into a weather-resistant GFCI outlet and have an in-use weatherproof cover installed. If using an extension cord, use one that is outdoor-rated and insulated for cold weather, and use junction covers or boxes for any connections to protect from moisture. Outdoor-rated smart plugs or thermostatically controlled outlets can be great ways to make sure your equipment is only heating when absolutely necessary.

K&H Pets is a reputable brand that makes outdoor-rated, MET listed products intended specifically for outdoor cats (note: their products can often be found at lower price-points on Amazon or Chewy than buying direct). Clawsable is a newer brand whose heated outdoor cat products are now also MET listed. With any product of this nature, particularly when shopping on Amazon, be sure to check the reviews for widespread safety issues or concerns! Avoid products that only have a handful of reviews; don't test unknown products with your cats in extreme weather conditions! For tried and true outdoor heating options you can also broaden your search to products meant for dog houses or chicken coops.

Here are some products that may be a good starting point for your search:

  • K&H 32oz Thermal-Bowl: a basic plastic heated bowl that works great for water! Available in larger sizes as well, uses 12-25w depending on size.
  • K&H Thermo-Kitty Cafe Bowl: 12oz and 24oz heated bowls (30w) with removable steel inserts that's ideal for feeding wet food and providing water.
  • K&H Extreme Weather Heated Kitty Pad: 40w 12.5x18.5" heating pad, also available in Petite size (9x12"). These pads heat to the cat's body temperature, approximately 102Ā°F which can help make a well-insulated shelter quite cozy.

Note: K&H shelters, and often other store-bought options, may require additional weatherproofing depending on how cold and wet your winter extremes are. They may not be adequately waterproofed to hold up to constant snow or wind, particularly if out in the open. It's best to test them out in milder conditions so you have time to reinforce them before the cats absolutely need them. Check reviews to see how other caregivers have set them up too!

Keeping Water from Freezing

Aside from providing adequate shelter, the other challenge caregivers face during the winter is keeping a fresh supply of water readily available at all times. A heated bowl is the most convenient way to provide water in below freezing temps, but for those without outdoor electrical outlets, here are some tips and tricks that might help cut down on how often you need to refresh your water:

  • Add a pinch of sugar to your water to lower its freezing point.
  • Don't refill with hot water! Hot water will evaporate faster in a cold environment, leaving your bowl with less water that will then freeze more quickly.
  • Find the right bowl! A deeper bowl with a narrow mouth will take longer to freeze. Avoid ceramic or steel bowls and instead opt for a plastic one, the thicker the better. Get two and nest them to make your bowl double-walled!
  • Find the right placement! Keep your bowl sheltered from wind and snow. Building an insulated feeding station can help slow your water from freezing and protect your food (and the hungry cat!) from the elements. Alternatively, placing your water bowl where it will be in direct sunlight is a great way to keep it warmed up during daylight. Pick a dark bowl or use dark materials to help it absorb sunlight more efficiently.
  • Additional measures include applying spray insulation around the exterior of your bowl, or placing it inside a styrofoam cooler or insulation board structure to help block out the cold air and wind.

Snugglesafe Microwave Heating Pads

Another popular option for heating both shelters and water bowls without electricity is the microwaveable Snugglesafe Disc. Be mindful of the heating instructions as they vary by wattage, check your microwave to determine how long the disc should be microwaved for. It is possible to overheat and melt the discs if you are not careful! Also take into consideration that having to swap out a heating pad every couple of hours may spook more feral-leaning cats from your shelters when they need them most. It may be best to focus on weatherproofing and insulating and let the cat provide the heat to do the rest!

Severe Storm and Natural Disaster Preparedness

This guide has mostly covered average weather conditions, but it's important to consider weather events and extremes such as blizzards and hurricanes as well. Check Alley Cat Allies' Quick Tips to Disaster-Proof A Community Cat Colony and lengthier How to Prepare and Keep Cats Safe in a Disaster guide. Neighborhood Cats has published a Storm Preparation and Recovery guide, and the Humane Society also has a page on Community Cat Disaster Preparedness. Please read up now for information on what you can do to help get your cats and colonies through the worst weather so you can be prepared in an emergency, but above all make sure you're staying safe yourself!

My winter set up for my colony

Post image
271 Upvotes

I've been caring for my neighborhood ferals for about six and half years now and, with winter approaching, I thought I'd share my set up. It's a plastic shed I bought for them after the women who let them stay in her garage that lived behind us (I assume) passed away around 4 years ago. It's insulated with leftover foam board insulation that my aunt had, then reflective bubble insulation. There's two cat sized doors for them to go in and out of that aren't in the photo. The carpet is a more recent addition because I would always have to replace some insulation in the spring because of scratching. It's inexpensive recycled rugs from Lowes and it's held up great. It's just screwed into the walls. All the shelters are also insulated and filled with straw. I usually have two more in there, but I need to replace the insulation first. I live in upstate NY and it can get very cold here, so shelter for these cats is a must. Fortunately, other people in the neighborhood also have spaces for them to stay. Off the top of my head, I can think of maybe 30 cats I see regularly in the neighborhood. At least half those stay in my little shed. If anyone is looking to build something and isn't super handy, this is a nice option since it had easy to follow instructions and didn't need a ton of different tools. I put it together with my aunt and did all the insulation and everything else myself in a day.

I wrote about Lucie, my feral rescue, a few months ago. She went from hissing at me, fleeing from me, wouldnā€™t allow any petting to this. Took 10 months . She took to my son firstā€¦ adores him! But one day she honored me with a lap nap. I couldnā€™t move, afraid to disturb her. I couldnā€™t believe it. Sheā€™s finally trusting us and relaxing around us. I couldnā€™t be happier . Love my little Lucie ā¤ļøšŸ„°

Mr W was a TNR fail. The R never happened. We brought him inside in February 2023, and he passed tonight. He developed sarcoma in his hind leg (possibly Feline Injection Site Sarcoma) and the tumor grew quickly, so amputation wouldn't have saved him, although we were going to try. His poor concrete jungle paw pads worried me when he first came inside, but look at them now after the wonders of smooth hardwood and area rugs. I'm glad his life was warmer and drier and safer, but I wish we could have loved him longer.

Question šŸ¤” Shelters

Hey fellow cat lovers,

Iā€™m a broke college student looking for advice on how to make the best cat shelter.

I live in a state with very harsh weather; Iā€™m talking snow, thunderstorms\heavy rain, and tons of wind. In the summer I made my cat colony some cardboard houses with straw and blankets along with a couple of microwaveable heating pads. Now that the weather has ramped up, the shelter hasnā€™t been doing itā€™s jobā€¦. Obviously. I duct taped some garbage bags around the shelter but it still gets wet. Any ideas that are affordable for someone on a lower income? I really want to help them out and Iā€™m upset I canā€™t afford one of those fancy outdoor cat houses, but I want to do the best I can yk?

Any advice would be AWESOME! thatā€™s all! Thank you!

Question šŸ¤” How is my feral kitten's socialization doing?

ā€¢ Upvotes

I trapped this kitten a week and a day ago. She is staying in a bathroom that I've equipped with a cat tree, litter, some toys, and blankets. I feed her wet kitten food three times a day.

I have no idea how old she is but she's a little over 1 pound and still really kittenish so I hope I got her within the socialization window.

She loves to be petted and held and purrs like a machine. She hasn't really started playing much, but has done a little bit. She hasn't taken to toys the way my other cats have, though. She is still afraid of any sudden movements. She'll run and hide if someone moves quickly or suddenly. That said, she's definitely grown more comfortable with us over the past week and I think that's encouraging.

If I take her to any other room she won't explore it, she'll just find the tightest place to hide.

Questions:

  • How can I encourage her to explore a bit more? I can't really let her wander freely because I have a very territorial older cat.
  • What can I expect in the next few weeks with regards to her socialization?
  • Is her behavior a sign that she's just a very timid cat, or can I hope that she becomes bolder as she feels safer and more comfortable?
  • I have travel plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Do I need to board her with someone else so she doesn't regress?

I'm now registered with the local kitten rescue and just waiting for them to get the vaccinations and de-worming and stuff together for her. My hope is that they can tell me her age and what's best for her.

Need advice

In August a feral appeared on my window. I live on ground floor with little garden and this beautiful cat decided to adopt me. He stayed on the window all day long and we made a lot of step on, until he was chilling in the house and going out whenever he wanted. We also slept together few nights when it was raining. He politely ask to enter when it was cold or raining.

But then the drama. Once I raised I bit my voice when I found him on my bed. I just moved him from the bed gently, nothing more than this. Now the cat itā€™s scared by me! He always run away when he sees me. But this is not happening with my girlfriend. With her he is the same as always, but when he see me he run away. I donā€™t even have the time to give him food that he will leave.

Yesterday my girlfriend went out and the cat followed her in the house. When he noticed me he went crazy! He started meowing very loudly. I tried to give him food but was very scaried so we opened the door to let him get out.

Any advice to reconquer his trust ?

Question šŸ¤” 2 weeks of socializing a semi-feral

Wondering if anyone has any experience with setbacks related to Litter boxes?

On Day 5, she started using it to pee On Day 8, she started using it to poop

Today, she peed on her comfort cushion and pooped elsewhere.

She's seemed a bit subdued the last 24 hours. Her nose is wet, she is eating but when she sees my partner she hides away. She seems to have imprinted on me and will come to me for pets.

My partner is super gentle with her, but she did deep scratch him about a week ago when he tried to get her out from underneath a table when she freaked out when introduced to a new room. She seems to have turned against him since!

I'm currently on an overnight stay in a different city for work. As I'm not there, she hasn't been enthusiastic about eating today, but he is trying to bribe her with some tasty chicken.

Any ideas if the litter tray is a major setback and why it could be happening?

Has anyone else experienced a cat imprinting on them but hating their partner? šŸ˜‚

I know it's only day 14, but we've now gotten her vaccinated and chipped to us. So she's found her forever home and we're determined to make this socialization work!

This is my first ever pet. I didn't have cats or dogs growing up, so I think I'm hyper aware of learning to take care of her. I over think it if she goes off food for a day, if her mood changes etc. I know cats do their own thing so I really have to learn to worry less šŸ˜‚

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Question šŸ¤” Stray Cat - Spayed or Pregnant?

Thumbnail

Hello! Animal lover here. We recently moved to a very rural area. We have 3 indoor cats that we brought with us to our new home. After moving here, a sweet older kitten started coming on our porch. We fed him and he moved into the house within a week. We had him neutered, got his shots, etc. This weekend, another cat showed up on our porch. She was very friendly, so we brought her in. Her ear is notched, so I thought she was already spayed. She was very hungry. However, her belly seems kind of big. Her nipples are pink and slightly elongated. Not engorged, no signs of recent nursing by the pictures Iā€™ve looked at online. Iā€™m questioning if she could be pregnant. But her ear is clearly notched. We have always had cats and dogs that we have found or rescued. But never a pregnant one as we always have them neutered or spayed immediately. I was wondering if the experts on here could look at the pictures of her notched ear for me and give an opinion. Also, we are finding that there are a lot of stray cats around our property. We arenā€™t sure if they are feral or being dumped. We have set up a feeding station for them, but arenā€™t sure what else to do. We canā€™t take them all in as we now have 5 cats in the house and 8 dogs. Our home is very large, but how many cats are too many? We also have a barn. Should we make some of these outdoor ones barn cats? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

How do you decide if feral can be socialized?

ā€¢ Upvotes

Itā€™s been a while since Iā€™ve TnRā€™d - I did a bunch when I first moved here about 13yo. Got them under control. Natural attrition has meant I only have about 3 regular ferals coming by now.

Last year an injured kitten showed up and I was able to catch her by hand. She was still pretty *****, prob under 3mo so I didnā€™t even consider not keeping her (I have 2 other cats).

Last week a new kitten showed up. It looks about 5mo. Iā€™m trying to get it on schedule so I can trap. I havenā€™t seen it in person, only on camera.

I donā€™t know if I have it in me to TnR it. But I also donā€™t know if I have time and emotional bandwidth to socialize it and get my other cats to be ok with it if itā€™s very feral.

How do you all decide to keep or release?

Feral Cat Limping

This is Gorp. Iā€™ve been feeding him and two others from his colony for about 2-3 months with the intention of TNR. Was naively hoping to go the peaceful route of not using the trap but thatā€™s not happening - so humane trap will be here tomorrow.

He showed up yesterday limping. The foot you can see here is the foot he is not putting weight on. Iā€™m going to bring him immediately to a vet - but was curious if anyone has ever dealt with this and if there are any visible signs you can see from these photos that might determine if itā€™s sprained or broken.

He is eating - however he used to come for breakfast and dinner and is now just showing up for dinner (understandable given itā€™s gotta be tough to get here on 3 legs). Heā€™s breathing normally, pupils are not dilated. I watched him climb up and over a large branch/bush - granted with 3 legs.

Thanks all! xoxo - a fellow crazy cat lady

Problem Solving šŸ’ Help making a passive microchip scanner

I feed several feral and stray cats and it's generally very challenging to scan them for microchips. They don't like me coming too close. My microchip scanner makes a scary beeping noise. And it also tends to time out and turn itself off before I can even get close to the cat.

I know microchip scanners don't work unless the cat is right next to it. But there are about five places on my porch where the cats very predictably and precisely put their heads every day. The water bowl, the kibble bowl, and several places where they like to rub their face against things. So I think it would be possible to install a microchip scanner in one of these five places.

I wanted to know how to build a microchip scanner that never turns off and never makes a scary beeping sound. I think farmers use something like this to track cows but I think the cow device is overpowered for what I need and probably more than I can afford. Any advice on what I should use?

It doesn't need to be a universal scanner; most of the chips in my area are ISO standard chips so an ISO-compliant RFID reader should be able to identify most cats.

Any thoughts on how to do this?

Problem Solving šŸ’ Ms. Boots

Hello Reddit. I need some advice. A little over 2 years ago we adopted this beautiful girl along with another cat at our local shelter. We chose both because no one else was looking at them due to behavior in the enclosure. Ms. Boots was clearly angry at being held captive, hissing at anyone who stopped to look. We were told she was simply overwhelmed and they had her on kitty sedatives. Fast forward 2 years. We LOVE her. She hangs out in the room with us, uses the litter box, comes when food is put out. Now for the tricky part. I have never touched her. She won't let us within 3 feet. I've mostly made peace with this until she was sick recently. I really want to take her to get checked by our vet. Any ideas how to get her without making her obvious fear worse? NOTE- I AM NOT GETTING RID OF HER. This is her home for the rest of her life. I just want to be happy and healthy.. Thanks in advance!

Bring home a stray cat

Found her as a kitten 2 years ago. She lives in my grandmas villages among other 100s of cats. This little girl and her sister though won my heart over from the first time I saw them. Sadly the sister passed last year. Now this girl (cleo) is pregnant with her second litter. I took a hasty decision to move here. And Iā€™m thinking i should take the cat home to my apartment here. I bring the strays inside sometimes and she does very well indoors and very well with the stray dogs. Since I will be bringing my own dog here too, itā€™s important they get along well. She is always by the door crying and trying to sneak in but the thing is she is used to the streets. Will it be bad to make her an indoor cat?? She looks huge now and looks like she will birth any second. Itā€™s getting cold outside but changing her location might make her super stressed?? What do I do

Trapped him now Iā€™m taking him to the vet. I feel so guilty

Hellooo. I have a formerly feral cat friend whoā€™s come around for a year now. I noticed about a month ago that he had worms in his stool + some blood so I made his appointment. Today was the appointment so I trapped him and now weā€™re on the way. I feel very guilty because he looks so nervous. Last time he was trapped was when I got him because he was in my friends neighborhood and he kept going in her cat door and she considered him a nusance so she trapped him and realased him by my house and weā€™ve been getting familiar since. so I hope he doesnā€™t think Iā€™m getting rid of him, with that sort of an association. Either way heā€™s probably so scared and I know itā€™s for the best but I feel majorly guilty šŸ˜ please wish me and the little guy luck ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Does anyone have pictures of failing to catch a cat using a cat trap? for example a raccoon/other animal being captured inside instead, cat trap being broken or cat not activating the trap, etc.
Pictures of other cat trap related issues are also appreciated! (trap hurting cat, etc)
(i need them because my school project about cat traps need firsthand proof thats why I'm here, sorry for any inconvenience and thank you!)

Celebration šŸ„³ First time meowing at me tonight

Didnā€™t catch the meows on video, but she was excited and let off a string of them for the first time when she realized the person coming out of the door shaking the treat jar was me. Been seeing her around work for around a year and a half now, though itā€™s just been over the last month that sheā€™s started accepting treats from me and coming close. At the point where I can see her contemplate coming up to sniff an outstretched hand, but isnā€™t quite there yet. Will still eat and bathe herself close by, though

Ultimate goal is to get her trapped, spayed, and returned to her home out here in rural nowhere, though thatā€™s proving difficult with how random it is that sheā€™ll show up during my workweek, and how skittish she is. For now, Iā€™ll just continue with the temptations cat crack, slow blinks, and reassuring talk in our chance encounters

I can't say how much it means to see this community growing as much as it has, knowing the positive change that each new face is bringing to the cats around them. Thank you all for making this subreddit what it is today: a kind and supportive place for caregivers of feral or community cats to connect with each other, ask questions, vent, or to just share their stories with people who get what it means to be a caregiver.

Here's to 20k more!

Itā€™s been a couple of months of adjusting but the pending two Tomā€™s have been neutered. I feel terrible that I can only offer them food and shelter , rather than keep them all inside. But due to people being annoying, I canā€™t and I have to settle. I havenā€™t tried to contact any rescues because to be honest these guys are little assholes. Very feral, very feisty but little softies deep down inside lol. I have yet to touch the last two in the back. Any suggestions on what the next step could possibly be? I honestly donā€™t mind them staying there. They have a set up in the back. I just fear for their safety since they are able to roam.
